XIX. The Sun

The Sun card — a bright golden sun with a face shines over a grey wall, a naked child rides a white horse with arms outstretched, sunflowers grow tall behind the wall, a red banner waves

The Scene

A bright golden sun with a human face radiates straight, wavy beams of light — the conscious and the subconscious, working together in full harmony. Below, a naked child sits on a white horse, arms thrown wide, a red banner streaming behind. Behind a grey stone wall, four tall sunflowers turn their faces to the light. The child is completely exposed, completely joyful, and completely unafraid.

After the Moon’s darkness and confusion, the Sun is unmistakable clarity. There are no shadows here. No hidden meanings. No tricks of half-light. Everything is visible, warm, and alive. The child’s nakedness is the same as the Star’s — vulnerability — but where the Star was quiet and reflective, the Sun is exuberant and celebratory.

Key Archetype

The Sun is pure, uncomplicated joy — the radiance that comes when inner and outer reality are fully aligned. He represents the child within, the part of you that experiences life as fundamentally good, the clarity that comes not from analysis but from direct, unfiltered experience.

In life, the Sun appears when things are genuinely going well — and you are allowing yourself to enjoy it. This is not complicated. Sometimes the cards say: yes. This is good. Feel it.

Upright Meaning

When The Sun appears upright, this is one of the most positive cards in the deck. Joy, success, vitality, and clarity are present or on their way. Whatever has been dark or uncertain is being illuminated. Whatever has been struggling is finding its stride.

The Sun represents the achievement of a natural, unforced happiness — not the manufactured kind that comes from ignoring problems, but the genuine kind that comes from having done the work (the Moon’s dark journey) and arriving at a place of light. You have earned this. Enjoy it.

This card also speaks to clarity. Where the Moon showed confusion and illusion, the Sun shows everything as it actually is. Decisions become easy. The path is obvious. The truth is visible. If you have been waiting for a sign, this is it.

In practical readings: success and achievement, joy and celebration, excellent health and vitality, clarity in a previously confusing situation, positive outcomes in any area, children or child-like joy, creative fulfillment.

Reversed Meaning

When reversed, The Sun is still positive — just dimmed. The joy is present but muted. The success is real but delayed. Something is preventing you from fully experiencing the light.

This may be self-imposed: imposter syndrome, guilt about success, an inability to let yourself be happy. Or it may be circumstantial: a cloud passing over an otherwise sunny day, a setback that delays but does not prevent a good outcome.

The reversed Sun rarely indicates something truly negative. It more often asks: Why are you not allowing yourself to feel the joy that is available to you? What is the cloud, and is it real or imagined?

Sometimes this reversal indicates burnout — too much sun, too much exposure, too much relentless positivity that has become exhausting. Even joy needs rest.

In a Spread

As a resource: Joy and clarity are your greatest assets. Trust them. The situation is as good as it looks. Allow yourself to celebrate and to feel genuinely happy.

As an obstacle: A dimming of joy or clarity is affecting the situation. Something is blocking the light — self-doubt, guilt, or an external setback. The good is still there; the obstacle is your ability to see it.

As an outcome: Success, joy, and clarity. The situation will resolve positively and openly. Expect warmth, fulfillment, and the sense that things are finally right.

Questions for Reflection

  • Am I allowing myself to fully experience the good things in my life?
  • What would it feel like to be as unguarded and joyful as the child on this card?
  • Where am I overcomplicating something that is actually simple?
  • What is the cloud that is dimming my sun — and can I let it pass?
